To Rome via Roberto Piperno
Poetry /Carona
I know the all paths of Rome cross on your palms
the stories of Nazis are still stuck in your curly beard
the pain of four years old child
Who had to leave his home
Who had two names
Glances out of your heart time to time
I remember you with the half made painting
On your hundred years old home.
Roberto, my dear poet friend,
How are you?
How is the lane, where Nazis first attacked?
How is the colosseum, which we never liked, but walked around?
How is the Ravioli, we ate from a special shop?
Which became my all-time favorite dish
You told me the story of plague and
Habit of washing hands by Jew of Italy
I sure, you are washing hands in Carona time
As this is in your blood
Dear friend, you are precious
Your stories are not fairy tales
But the history of human kind
Man wins, makes colosseum
To enjoy the blood of defeated
Now this is turn of nature
to converted this world in to colosseum
to take revenge of her beloved one
we are culprits,
we are victims
we are haters,
we are lovers
We win and same time
We all loose
Most of the time
I know, you will come out of this time
Same as you came out of the Nazi attack
And talk to the roman lanes and stones of every buildings
I don’t know if I am sad
except when a smile
begins to splutter from my lips
I don’t know if I am happy
except when water begins
to flutter from my eyes
I don’t even know if I am singing
except when a stream of sweat
bursts open from my pores
I don’t know if I am walking
except when I oar the sea waves
with my hands
I also don’t know if I am swimming
except when I lean back with closed eyes
on a sand wall
I feel my strangeness
in something else
Can knowing be better that this?
The Western wind and mothers sighs
As the western wind starts blowing
the humming of mothers begins raining
then puts it off abruptly
on the desert sand
the suffocation of closed rooms
disappears little by little
Mother had a special relation with wind
The wind from her hand fan
Use to to talk to her
At the time of summer heat
When wind get dried upon her lips
Mother used to wait
For the wind, and its wetness
Which came from her land
After having meet with her ponds
Use to bring wetness of a drop of tear
Wind does not come to my close house
I have to go to meet he
Under the tree, where she comes
With a wetness of the Sea
The wind of Sea is salti
Which stick on my lips
Waitng for some kisses
Which can suck salt from lips
I recollect the salt in the sand
Who has a comparative with wind
Wheather it Sea,
Or the sand
The only Wind scribes
The story of love

Countervision
Oh crazy eyes the right
Rebels against the left
Not in the name of sight
But for the fight itself
The left’s farsightedness
Ignores what time hath writ
Scanning instead remote
Advertising billboards
While the right stays fixed
On what’s in front of it
Their obstinate standoff
Feels distinctly weird
Folks hide minor skin defects
With utmost cleverness
But my right eye’s X-ray
Detects them right away
The left stares off into the distance
Toward the approaching footsteps
Of one who far from near
Might not even be there
So when I look out at a tree
The bird’s eye is all I see
And when I gaze at ocean waves
They appear as foam in space
I notice clearly and much more
Small things I never did before
Translated from the Hindi by Philip Nikolayev
A Yawny Afternoon at the Chartered Accountant’s Office
As the fat cat grabs a catnap
On a leatherbound ledger’s back
Some numbers peek from under the binding
Leap out to freedom prancing and dancing
The cat’s eyes open with zero interest
And shut the gut has too much to digest
Staring at these from where I’m at
I imagine the numbers inside the cat
In the stomach the gains the losses
I ain’t coming back to this office
Translated from the Hindi by Philip Nikolayev
Diary from Turkey
The nails of this city are very long
Nailed even the door of God
And I fear its sharpness
Seated near the glass window having fish
See the nail wounds in the chest
The fish at my table became alive
Sat at a table nearby drinking soup
I come out on to the road in search of that dog
Who will narrate to me stories of people dead
This city like one big intestine
Sometimes goes down and sometimes rises
And catapults you directly into the sky
The teeth of the city are nothing less
Which after chewing spits out
Behind my closed window
This unknown city unfolds like a crab
………………………………………………………………………………………….
The city that didn’t speak your tongue
Which one could understand even while asleep
The sound of the tongue clicking on the palate
Coming through the lips like a whistle
Leaving you feeling lonely
In a matter of seconds the city turns into a jungle
And people begin plucking leaves from the tree
The tongue is not your maid
Who swims in your ear like a fish
The history of centuries
Ground on the millstone
To a fine paste like chutney
Savoured with bread
For months now I have been living without my language
I fear my words don’t pull over a sheet and sleep off coffined
And will be left behind without a language
…………………………………………………………………………………….
What is there to worry if you built your wall on the wall of my faith?
What would happen if you drew a few lines across my painting?
It‘s all good, as my Lord found an excuse to chat with your God
When two lords meet
The tension in the city is bound to decrease
(On seeing the church and mosque together at Hagia- Sophia)
At last the teeth of the city
Have left me and moved forward
Oh God! Is this the city where the sun has disappeared into its lanes?
While conquering the heights
Does it really even matter if you have lived for a life time?
Is there anyone here you can call your own?
The city is only Esquichire
Where love melts in the air
And moon hangs on the bridge
………………………………………………………………………………………..
They drove a nail on the head
Accepting oneself as a slave
The second nail strengthened their faith
By four nails they became the richest people in the city
The sixth nail drew them closer to God
Oh God, How great your wonders
Your blue umbrella strewn over their heads
………………………………………………………………………………………
In the intestine of this city
Remains things still undigested
Like a python
Devouring both humans and humanity
Having sown the seeds
Beneath the foundation of another
And when the tree sprouted
Called it their own
Where sky is the limit for you and me
……………………………………………………………………………………..
While leaving a city
The feeling of loss is inevitable
I had lost myself on the lines drawn on paper from your canvas
And now will forever remember you
With a feeling of loss.

Citizenship
he started taking down the one after another
small pieces of skies from his roof top
a piece of sunlight , which entered forcefully from the window
and the tin shop standing in the corner the lane
he started taking down the pink cloth hanging on cloth line
the aroma of wheat from the oven
he started waking, he stated running, swimming
and when his soles touched the earth
he could see so many holes on the sky like tent top
though his own sky was missing
sound of tin, and the aroma of the baking wheat
now he could understood that
he lost his own citizenship

My Sheet
That morning when I woke, I saw
a small hole in my sheet,
the result of being lost in sleep.
So I struggled with silken thread throughout the day
and by night had stitched a window
for glimpsing a few, new dreams.
The next day I woke to a new hole
and this time added paint to the thread.
Before dark I’d built a door.
My dreams could leave now and wander
instead of gazing out a window,
dreams freed to roam the entirety of the night.
Each morning brought new holes;
each day bustled with thread and paint.
Today my sheet is an enormous courtyard
with a banyan tree filled with birds with beaks like red stars,
though both sun and moon remain absent.
So I spend my mornings searching for holes
where a sun and moon might be woven,
not only in this galaxy
but also across
the many, layered others,
knowing at the end there’s a final hole
through which to exit
and join the great beyond
in a seamless realm of light.

The Body change
With my first step onto the seventh-story floor
I removed the coolness like a shoe
that I’d brought from the courtyard
painted with cow dung.
I donned the new room like a sweater
with windows, shelves, and walls,
the surroundings climbing my body like bougainvillea.
Whenever moving between homes
I carry bits of the old ones on my body.
The walls of the next home are made of sunlight
that disappears with darkness.
To put on this home
is to enter dreamfulness
as a road to reality.
At the final home, a pillow waits
on my side of a shared bed
beside a window facing south.
The south is the house of death.
I make it my body
and lie down on my pillow.
Now
I am ready.

Mother Used to Save
At any moment,
under any conditions, the storehouse
of mother was never empty,
she saved oils, grains, pickles, beans,
salt in clay pots, glass jars of jaggery,
all of it living for centuries
in her magic storeroom, and available
in an instant
without a single “Open, Sesame!”
Mother saved flesh, too:
on her waist and hips, for her
seven hungry children, born
one after another,
and for the next generation:
to love grandma’s soft, sweet feel.
And she saved stories, myths,
unknown rhythms, steps
for the grandchildren’s dreams,
a way of keeping her with them
after she’s long gone.
In her final moments, her last
breaths left her daughters a home,
through which she keeps dissolving
like a sugar packet into water.

Before leaving
close all the doors, one
by one,
hear them shut with a click,
pat each knob farewell,
and try never to promise to return,
not even by mistake,
don’t fret over who next
might pass through; each door
itself decides this
before leaving wipe away
each footprint
and fingerprint, no longer
needed by anyone,
before leaving, pack your things,
bundle every rusted story
and decorate the table with memories of laughter
before leaving, check every book,
throwing out the pressed flowers
dried in their pages
before leaving erase every line, break
open all the knots
and smile with strength
until life comes to sit
in the corners of your mouth
before leaving, close the final door,
and the rest will close themselves

Dreaming in Another Land
He wanted her to smile
the dream of living in another land.
He wanted her to dance
like a melody on a violin’s strings.
He wanted to see in her lap
the milk-stained mouth of a sleeping child.
He looked after her
like day-old bread to be relished.
He was trying to save her
from the barbed wire
around Albania or Siberia
that bloomed like flowers from stone.
He loved her more than his country
but lost her far away like his dream,
the same as a young man
of his enemy country.
